What Actually Happens When We Remove a Fish Tank
A fish tank is not just glass walls. It's a system: the tank itself, the cabinet or stand beneath it, the filtration unit, pump, lighting hood, and sometimes a sump hidden inside the stand. Each piece comes apart separately.
The tank must be fully drained and emptied of substrate before we arrive — gravel, sand, coral, all of it. Even empty, a standard 4-foot plate-glass tank weighs 30–40 kg. Larger setups (6-foot marine tanks with thick tempered glass) can exceed 70 kg for the tank alone. Plate glass flexes when you tilt it, and if it's carried at the wrong angle, the silicone seams give way and the whole panel cracks. Our crew knows how to keep the tank level and rigid through doorways and into the passenger lift.
The cabinet stand is often the heavier piece. MDF or plywood, swollen from years of humidity and micro-spills, bolted together in ways that don't come apart cleanly. We dismantle it on-site so it fits through your corridor without gouging the walls.
A typical fish tank job needs two crew members for a standard setup. Larger or heavier rigs — think a 5-foot tank on a solid hardwood stand — may need three or four. We confirm crew size when we see your photos.
Where the Materials End Up
Glass panels that come out intact get routed through recycling channels where they can be processed. Metal stands and aluminium frames go to scrap-metal intermediaries for sorting and recycling. The MDF cabinet, filters, tubing and electrical components are separated — anything with reuse value is passed along; the rest goes to licensed waste intermediaries for proper disposal. We don't make recycling-rate promises, but we route materials responsibly rather than dumping everything into a single skip.
HDB Flats
No service lift in HDB blocks, so your fish tank travels down in the standard passenger lift. If it fits, it goes. If it doesn't — rare, but possible with very large custom tanks — we may need to angle it through the stairwell for a floor or two. Surcharges apply for stair carry or walk-up blocks without a lift, and we'll flag that at quote stage so there are no surprises. If you're mid-renovation and clearing the tank as part of a bigger move-out or handover clearance, we can bundle it with the rest of the job.
Condos and Landed Properties
For condos, the owner or tenant needs to arrange MCST approval and book the service lift before our arrival — access rules differ per development, and that conversation sits between you and your building management. If your MCST requires lift padding, that's provided and arranged by them. We work within whatever time slot you've secured. If you're dealing with high-floor access logistics, factor in the lift booking window when you message us. Does the tank need to be drained and empty before you arrive? Yes. All water, gravel, sand, coral and livestock must be removed before pickup. An undrained tank is far too heavy to move safely, and residual water shifts the centre of gravity mid-carry — that's how glass cracks. Filters and pumps can stay attached to the cabinet; we'll disconnect those on-site.
